The case
Our summary of the public record. The small numbers show where each fact comes from.
On the morning of February 3, 1996, Terence Paquette, 31, the lone overnight clerk at a Lil' Champ convenience store on Clarcona Ocoee Road in northwest Orange County, was found killed inside the store. Investigators said the attacker had left his own blood at the scene, but the DNA did not match anyone in criminal databases, there were no witnesses, and the case went cold.
In 2019 the Orange County Sheriff's Office asked FDLE for help. FDLE contracted the Texas lab Othram to build a genealogy profile from the crime-scene DNA, and genealogists traced it to a family that pointed detectives toward a small group of brothers. One of them, Kenneth Robert Stough Jr., had once worked at the store and lived nearby. Detectives followed him and, investigators said, saw him throw away beer cans at a Lake County gas station. DNA from those cans matched the 1996 blood.
Stough was arrested in November 2021, more than 25 years after the killing. In August 2023, after a five-day trial, an Orange County jury found him guilty of first-degree murder with a weapon, and he was sentenced to life in prison.
