The case
Our summary of the public record. The small numbers show where each fact comes from.
Maura Murray was a 21-year-old nursing student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst who had earlier attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. On February 9, 2004, she left the Amherst area and drove north into New Hampshire without telling anyone about the trip, investigators said. Earlier that day she was recorded on ATM surveillance wearing a dark jacket and jeans.
At about 7:30 p.m., her black Saturn sedan went off snow-covered Route 112 (Wild Ammonoosuc Road) in Haverhill, New Hampshire, in what looked like a single-car crash. According to the New Hampshire Department of Justice, a passerby stopped and spoke with a young woman believed to be Murray. By the time police arrived she was gone, and she has not been seen or heard from since.
The New Hampshire Cold Case Unit treats her disappearance as suspicious and is still actively investigating it. The FBI issued a nationwide ViCAP alert in 2022. State Police searched land in Landaff and Easton that July, and the FBI produced an age-progressed image for the 20th anniversary in February 2024. On the 22nd anniversary in 2026, the unit said it is applying new technology and investigative techniques to the evidence.
