George Contos, 58, known as "Uncle Waldo," lived in the Daytona North area west of Bunnell and ran a business from his home. He wore a prosthetic leg. He kept in regular touch with his family in Connecticut, and when that contact stopped in early May 2015, they asked for a welfare check. The Flagler County Sheriff's Office lists him as reported missing on May 17, 2015.
Three days later, deputies found his car, a white 1997 Lincoln Town Car, abandoned in the parking lot of an Ace Hardware store on Palm Coast Parkway. The Sheriff's Office soon treated the disappearance as suspicious and later concluded that he was likely the victim of a homicide. His body has never been found.
In January 2016, FCSO and Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida put up a billboard asking for information. In 2018 the case was featured on the Oxygen series Cold Justice, and the Sheriff's Office said its detectives had done extensive work but that no arrests had been made. FCSO says the case is being investigated as a homicide with the State Attorney's Office and continues to ask anyone with information to come forward.
