On October 29, 2001, William Stanton was sitting in his vehicle at the railroad crossing on Elm Avenue in Bunnell, waiting for a train to pass. According to the Sheriff's Office, two unidentified men walked up behind the vehicle and fired into it.
Investigators said two guns were used, a .380-caliber and a .45-caliber. Stanton was killed. A passenger in the vehicle was not hurt.
The shooters have never been identified. The FCSO Cold Case Unit lists the case as an unsolved homicide under case #01-33501. Little else about the case has been made public, which is why investigators say any detail, even a small one, could matter.
